The “Flying Car” category includes all aircraft that are also legally allowed to be driven on the roads. They must meet a certification standard for road use without the need for any laborious modification. Convertible vehicles that “transform” are included provided the conversion can be performed by the pilot/passenger without any specialized skills, and that it has no swapped components (e.g. removable wings or landing gear).
It is not required that the vehicle take-off vertically. Take-off/landing may be performed from any location, as there are no road regulations anywhere in the world that currently allow for take-off or landing directly on a public road.
The Flying Car is the oldest vision for personal air mobility short of strapping wax wings to your back. It is also the category most likely to bring useful aircraft to market in the very near future.
